Artifacts and Reflections |
a. Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners. |
Culturally Sensitive: The candidate should be able to develop awareness and understanding of individual and group differences when diagnosing and prescribing transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Addressing Diversity with Technology NETS Reflection: This assignment dealt directly with how to utilize technology to assist learners with special needs. One of the many great benefits of modern technology, learners with disabilities now have many different tools to help aid them in their educational goals. Besides those with disabilities, modern computing technologies can now be used to tailor instruction to those with different learning styles. With the vast resources available via the Internet, student can tailor content to their preferred learning style. Some might watch a video while others might listen to a podcast or read plain text. This assignment only required us to focus on one student, but technology is now available for all. Conceptual Framework Reflection: Completing this assignment required us to use technology to modify a lesson for one student. When reflecting on student modifications, it is important that we are culturally sensitive to those students who require it. All students are different and some require different forms of help to succeed. Teaching at a school with a high percentage of special education students and English language learners it is a reality for me on a daily basis. |
b. Apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences. |
Decisive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills when making decisions that will influence effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Big Three Paper NETS Reflection: The Big Three Paper was done to evaluate the program Study Island. This assignment stressed to importance of researching new technologies and applications before implementation. When planning and designing curriculum it is vital that we take the time to analyze technologies to see if they have merit. In other words, will they perform some function better than the existing methods? New programs should never be used just because they are new. Conceptual Framework Reflection: Ultimately, this assignment requires one to make an informed decision regarding the new technology. After the research has been done and the program evaluated, a decision must be made. Decisions should be made based on solid research and with the utmost care and thought as they will most certainly have an impact on both students and teachers. |
c. Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability. |
Knowledgeable: The candidate should be able to demonstrate general knowledge inherent in a liberal arts curriculum, advanced knowledge in content areas, and specific knowledge in professional education for the implementation of transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Website Evaluation NETS Reflection: This assignment required us to evaluate a website based on content, technical aspects, design, support, and motivation. Evaluation of resources, whether a website or new piece of software is a necessary skill for all people, especially those involved with education. There exist countless websites on the Internet, not all of them contain accurate and reliable information. Before using a technological resource in a lesson, it is necessary to critique the material to ensure it is both accurate and suitable for your intended audience. This assignment was a perfect example of the type of evaluation that one must apply to these types of resources.
|
d. Plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities. |
Adaptive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate flexibility and strategic planning appropriate to a wide variety of learners for effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Web Quest NETS Reflection: This assignment of designing a web quest requires not only a good lesson design but also thought on how one will implement the assignment in the classroom or lab setting. Are there enough computers? Do any of the activities require the use of speakers? These are some of the questions one must consider when implementing such a lesson. Conceptual Framework Reflection: In this instance, I had students working in groups, but each group member had a particular assignment within each group ensuring that all made a contribution. Depending on the class make-up, groups made have to be pre-arranged in order to provide for the best learning experience for each member. This type of setup requires one to be adaptive to the learning environment as well as the individual students. |
e. Plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment. |
Proactive: The candidate should be able to advocate for the removal of barriers that impede lifelong learning and hinder transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Online Course Design NETS Reflection: This assignment was one of the most gratifying and helpful in the program, as this is how I would like to teach someday. I had to design a module for an online course, which is quite different from a traditional classroom setting. I had to use various Internet applications like Google Docs and Course Den Conceptual Framework Reflection: This assignment definitely requires one to be proactive in terms of removing barriers. Although, some new barriers arise in an online format, many are removed, such as needing a physical building and required face-to-face contact. The online environment allows people to participate in classes that otherwise might be inaccessible to them. They could be across the country, work a full time job, or anything that would impede upon their ability to attend a traditional course setting. |
f. Identify and apply instructional design principles associated with the development of technology resources. |
Reflective: The candidate should be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the diagnosis and prescription for transformational systemic change. |

Artifacts and Reflections |
a. Facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards. |
Proactive: The candidate should be able to advocate for the removal of barriers that impede lifelong learning and hinder transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Web Quest NETS Reflection: For this assignment, I designed a web quest that allowed students to use the Internet along with office software to learn about the major components of a computer. In this particular web quest the technology standards and the content standards were one and the same. However, a web quest can easily be done in any subject area. Whether science, art, social studies, or math, web quests can direct students to rich multimedia experiences that are far more interactive than just listening to a lecture. Conceptual Framework Reflection: A web quest can be designed with many options and choices for students. For example, students could watch a video, read text, or listen to a narrator, whatever their preferred method. These could be indentified in the web quest. Not only can the information be tailored to students, but also how they student demonstrates that knowledge. Students could opt to write an essay or make a presentation or even a podcast to demonstrate what they have learned.
|
b. Use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students. |
Empathetic: The candidate should be able to develop the sensitivity for individual, family, and institutional needs that will embrace transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Technology Connected Lesson Plan NETS Reflection: This particular lesson was created with 8th grade students in mind. These students are very social, and if asked, they always want to work in groups. The lesson is designed to allow students to work through a tutorial on their own but then will be allowed to work on their presentation in small groups. Often students at this age can learn from their peers much easier than from teachers. It is important to design lessons that include as many of the forms of learning as possible whether visual, auditory, or intrapersonal. Conceptual Framework Reflection: This type of planning requires the designer to be empathetic to the students they are teaching. As a teacher is important to get to know your students and classroom personalities. These factors must be considered when designing and planning lessons and activities. |
c. Apply technology to demonstrate students' higher-order skills and creativity. |
Adaptive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate flexibility and strategic planning appropriate to a wide variety of learners for effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Online Course Design NETS Reflection: During the design of this online course module, included was the creation of presentations that would explain the process of solving several types of equations. When students are required to explain the processes involved while solving equations, ensures they understand the concepts. The creation of artifacts demonstrates the higher order skills that are the ultimate goal of any learning activity. The fact that they were collaborating in an online environment makes the application of technology a necessity. Conceptual Framework Reflection: When planning and implementing coursework in an online environment, it is necessary to be able to adapt the content to that particular format. For instance, to get students to work together on a project in this setting, technological considerations have to be taken into account. In this case I used Google Docs which allowed them to work together on the presentations. They could also interact within the discussion boards or email. |
d. Manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment. |
Reflective: The candidate should be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the diagnosis and prescription for transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Instructional Website - Pythagorean Theorem NETS Reflection: I designed this instructional website to allow students to learn about the Pythagorean Theorem. Included are the history of the theorem, a review of some prerequisite skills, a discovery activity, how to apply the theorem and finally some practice problems. Students could work through this website in the computer lab alone or with a partner. This is a good example of how students could be guided through an interactive lesson in a computer or technology lab. This site could also be used as a review for students who may need to refresh their skills using the Pythagorean Theorem. Conceptual Framework Reflection: When designing a website that will be used for instruction, reflection is an important aspect. Often website instructions and explanations, while very evident to the creator, are confusing to the user. It is important to get feedback from the end users to see what they liked and disliked, what was easy to follow, and how it might be better presented. A website is a great instructional tool that can be accessed from anywhere; it needs to be looked at periodically to ensure that students can utilize it. |
e. Use current research and district/state/national content and technology standards to build lessons and units of instruction. |
Inquisitive: The candidate should seek continually to improve their knowledge, disposition, and skills to influence transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Instructional Design Plan NETS Reflection: This assignment was done prior to the building of my online module. Before designing any lesson or course, it is necessary to know the standards which you are trying to teach. Otherwise, your instruction will not meet the proper objectives. Creating such an outline also makes your job easier when you begin to build such a module. While it is quite alright to go above and beyond the standards, these should remain your primary goal. Conceptual Framework Reflection: When I begin to design lessons and activities, it is important that I look up the latest standards for whatever the particular content area. Not only should one stay current on the content standards, but also what new technologies and programs are available that may allow you to meet these new standards in a better way. In this design plan, I have students using Google Docs which is relatively new, or was new at the time the design was done. The Google Doc applications make it easier than ever for students to collaborate with one another. |
TL-IV. Assessment and Evaluation |

Artifacts and Reflections |
a. Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques. |
Knowledgeable: The candidate should be able to demonstrate general knowledge inherent in a liberal arts curriculum, advanced knowledge in content areas, and specific knowledge in professional education for the implementation of transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Online Course Design NETS Reflection: During this assignment, I used a varied assortment of assessments. Students were required to participate in discussion boards, complete practice problems, work in groups to prepare presentations, and take the module quiz. All of these assignments are submitted electronically via the Internet. As this is an online course design, technology is inherent in the design. Conceptual Framework Reflection: Creating these types of assignments and methods of assessment take a great deal of forethought and knowledge of how these systems work. One must have a firm grasp, not only on the content, but how the materials will be delivered and assignments turned in. |
b. Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. |
Collaborative: The candidate should be able to develop skills to work effectively with various stakeholders involved in the educational process that will bring about transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Evaluation Plan NETS Reflection: For this assignment, I am evaluating the use of the Study Island program within our school. I am comparing the data from classes and students who use the program with MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test scores. Both Study Island and MAP scores are obtained electronically from their respective web sites. These type of data collection is very efficient in terms of the collection process. It also makes for a much easier comparison. This is a preliminary evaluation to see if there exists a correlation between the scores. Conceptual Framework Reflection: This assignment has required me to work collaboratively with our curriculum specialist and other teachers who are actively using the Study Island program. Most often in the educational world, you will find yourself working together with others. Whether it be students, teachers, administrators of stakeholders within the community. Collaboration skills are very important to the success of one's endeavors. |
c. Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity. |
Decisive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills when making decisions that will influence effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Online Course Design NETS Reflection: The evaluation methods used in this course design were varied, such as through discussion board postings and an online quiz. However, the group presentation section of this module required the most technological skill from the students. It also required them to collaborate with their group members through various electronic means. They were also creating a product together, by way of the Internet. The multiple evaluations throughout this module would give me a good overall picture as to their progress, not only in the content area but their abilities to use technology for learning, communicating, and productivity. Conceptual Framework Reflection: This assignment shows the importance of making decisions about assessments. A good lesson, in my opinion, should start with the assessment. It is hard to know how to set up your instruction if you don't know what you want the end result to be. Therefore, one must decide on the end products first. |

Artifacts and Reflections |
a. Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning. |
Collaborative: The candidate should be able to develop skills to work effectively with various stakeholders involved in the educational process that will bring about transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Creation of Critical Thinking Activities NETS Reflection: This assignment required the creation of critical thinking activities to supplement an online course from McGraw-Hill. My partner and I chose the Introduction to Literature Course. We took each section of this course and designed a critical thinking activity that could be utilized by those who teach the course. This assignment was done in an online course that is furthering my education and professional development. I like the idea that we were creating activities for students participating in online courses while we ourselves are in an online course. My time spent in school as both student and teacher has cultivated my interests in a great many things. Not a day goes by that I am not looking up something for no other purpose than to increase my knowledge on that particular topic. I feel that I am a learner for life. Conceptual Framework Reflection: This was one of many assignments that required working with others. In this case it was one other individual, but the truth is that the ability to work with others towards a common goal is truly an essential element to being successful. |
b. Continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning. |
Reflective: The candidate should be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the diagnosis and prescription for transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Program Evaluation Article Review 2 NETS Reflection: This is one of many article reviews that were required throughout the program. This particular article was an evaluation of a chemistry DVD module. These types of research articles are an invaluable asset for those in positions to make decisions regarding the use and purchase of technological resources. One would not want to purchase some sort of instructional aide without first performing the proper amount of research. As an instructional technology specialist, I will be the one people come to seeking advice. Conceptual Framework Reflection: When reviewing articles like the one in this assignment, it is always a good idea to be reflective. I find myself always thinking about how I might design a module or what would be a better way to evaluate a new tool. Reflection is such a big part of the learning process. When reviewing an article, you are, in a sense, reflecting on what you have read, the strengths and weaknesses of the research, pros and cons of a new application, etc. |
c. Apply technology to increase productivity. |
Leading: The candidate should be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills to initiate and facilitate transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Study Island Tutorials NETS Reflection: When our school first obtained access to the Study Island Program, there existed a lack of knowledge among the staff on how to use the program. In order to keep from having repeating training sessions, I used this assignment to build a series of tutorials that show how to get started using the Study Island software. By making these videos available to teachers in our school, they work through them at their own pace and on their own time. Conceptual Framework Reflection: In whatever work environment, one should be able to take on leadership roles in areas they have particular expertise. I am by no means anyone's boss, but I am prepared to lead training sessions on new technologies or workshops having to do with technology, math, or science. This particular assignment let me focus on how I might conduct training sessions and gave me ideas on starting a teacher help area on our school's website. I feel that I am more prepared to lead such initiatives as a result of this program. |
d. Use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning. |
Collaborative: The candidate should be able to develop skills to work effectively with various stakeholders involved in the educational process that will bring about transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Using Google Docs NETS Reflection: In this particular assignment we used the Google Docs program to collaborate with one another while exploring the capabilities and features of this application. We found it to be a great tool for both teachers and students. The great thing about collaboration tools which are becoming more popular, is how easy it is to share information. As a teacher, it is now easier than ever to have a class website with assignments, tutorials, and links. These environments are great places for students to display their work, leave feedback, and display to the community what it is they are learning. Conceptual Framework Reflection: New computing technologies allow levels of collaboration equivalent to being in the same room. In some instances they can actually be better. Considering Google Docs allows two people to simultaneously work on a document, which would be tricky with pencil and paper. If working with someone a great distance away, it is also much cheaper than a plane ticket across the country. Be it a wiki, a social networking site, or Google Docs, collaboration with peers, friends, and the community is becoming easier by the day. In completing this assignment on Google Docs we got to explore one of the many tools that make this true. |

Artifacts and Reflections |
a. Model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use. |
Knowledgeable: The candidate should be able to demonstrate general knowledge inherent in a liberal arts curriculum, advanced knowledge in content areas, and specific knowledge in professional education for the implementation of transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: 3.4 Copyright Assignment NETS Reflection: This assignment had us look up copyright and fair use policies along with our school systems student and teacher appropriate use regulations. With most everything available in some digital format, it is now easier than ever to copy works that you may not have the rights to use. It is part of my job to ensure that the work I am doing and the work of my students does not break any of these copyright laws. Also, I hope to instill in my students the merit of giving credit where credit is due. I often tell them that they would not want someone to take credit for the work they have done. Although this can be difficult to convey to 8th graders, it is a major responsibility of instructors at all levels of education. Conceptual Framework Reflection: This is an area where one must be knowledgeable of the copyright and fair use laws. It is important that we, as instructional technology specialists, are especially well versed in this area because we will often be the person who gets questions regarding these issues from our colleagues. |
b. Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities. |
Culturally Sensitive: The candidate should be able to develop awareness and understanding of individual and group differences when diagnosing and prescribing transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Addressing Diversity with Technology NETS Reflection: This assignment was completed with a using a specific scenario. However, it puts one in the correct mindset to utilize technology to enable learners to overcome whatever their specific obstacle. Whether they are ELLs or have some form of disability, technologies exist that can allow them to thrive in the classroom. For example, students who have trouble reading can use programs to read the text aloud as they follow along, or for English language learners they can access programs like Google Translate or Yahoo's Babel Fish to have entire web pages translated into other languages. The important thing is that instructors be aware of the diverse nature of the students they teach and be ready to adapt materials to their specific needs. |
c. Identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity. |
Adaptive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate flexibility and strategic planning appropriate to a wide variety of learners for effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Creation of Critical Thinking Activities NETS Reflection: Creating the activities in this assignment required thought as to how best to have students use higher order thinking skills. These activities were created to supplement the course material but can also be viewed as differentiation of instruction. For example, not all students can just read a chapter's worth of material and pull from it the connections and concepts that are the desired result. These activities, whether writing summaries or the construction of a graphic organizer allow learners to manipulate the material in different ways. These types of activities allow learners make the more meaningful connections and hopefully add to existing schema more effectively. |
d. Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources. |
Inquisitive: The candidate should seek continually to improve their knowledge, disposition, and skills to influence transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: 3.4 Copyright Assignment NETS Reflection: Detailed in this assignment were procedures that are performed at the start of every year when students are given the school system's acceptable use policy form along with the student Internet access agreement. Students are told the rules and regulations of the county but also are presented with safety guidelines. For example, students are told about giving out their personal information. They are told that if they would not tell a creepy looking stranger the information at the mall, then they should not be posting the information on the Internet. These safety protocols are reiterated throughout the year. Computing technologies and the Internet have given people learning opportunities and tools that make one wonder how things were done in days prior. However, they have brought with them dangers and problems that need to be addressed. Conceptual Framework Reflection: When discussing safety and the healthy use of technological resources, it is important that those in leadership roles stay current on the latest threats to safety and be alert to how misuse and abuse of technological resources occurs. This requires an inquisitive nature as technology advances at rapid rate. |
e. Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students. |
Empathetic: The candidate should be able to develop the sensitivity for individual, family, and institutional needs that will embrace transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Technology Connected Lesson Plan Conceptual Framework Reflection: These types of considerations require one to be empathetic to the needs of students. I know that many of my students are struggling in these economic times and do not have a lot of technological resources outside of the classroom. Therefore it is important that I ensure they have the prerequisite skills they might not have acquired due to their circumstances at home. I know I can sometimes take for granted some of the skills that I believe students have, when in actuality they have never had the opportunity to develop. |
TL-VII. Procedures, Policies, Planning, and Budgeting for Technology Environments. |

Artifacts and Reflections |
a. Use the school technology facilities and resources to implement classroom instruction. |
Proactive: The candidate should be able to advocate for the removal of barriers that impede lifelong learning and hinder transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Study Island Tutorials NETS Reflection: While this assignment was done with teachers in mind, it is directly related to the utilization of technology facilities. These tutorials were designed to help teachers create online assignments using the Study Island. This software is aligned to Georgia's standards and can be used to assess student learning or for remediation for students who may be struggling with a particular element. Once teachers have set up their classes and assignments within the program, students can access them via and computer connected to the Internet. Classroom computers, computer labs, or even their home computer can be used to work on their assignments. Conceptual Framework Reflection: It is one with a proactive nature that seeks to use a school's resources to facilitate learning. Technology resources within a school should be used to allow students to experience the curriculum in the rich format that is most often provided by the Internet. Virtual field trips are one example of how students can visit places that are inaccessible in the real world. Doing this requires planning and the drive to make sure the proper arrangements have been made inside the facility. |
b. Follow procedures and guidelines used in planning and purchasing technology resources. |
Decisive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills when making decisions that will influence effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Evaluation Plan NETS Reflection: This assignment has allowed me to play a role in the decision process of deciding whether or not to continue with the subscription of the Study Island software. If my evaluation shows that there does exist a correlation between student CRCT scores and the use of the program, this will be taken under consideration by the curriculum specialist and the administration. Conceptual Framework Reflection: This evaluation assignment is allowing me to play a part in the decision making process of the administration. I am no longer just one who waits to see what will be done, but am now playing a vital role in the process. When I am finished with this program, I hope to become more involved in the school system in terms of decisions made about technology. |
c. Participate in professional development opportunities related to management of school facilities, technology resources, and purchases. |
Inquisitive: The candidate should seek continually to improve their knowledge, disposition, and skills to influence transformational systemic change |
Artifact: Professional Development Article Review Conceptual Framework Reflection: Professional development concerning instructional technologies is another area I believe should be followed closely. It requires the instructional technologist to remain inquisitive and keep up-to-speed on the current research and trends. If we do not take on this responsibility, it will likely not receive the attention it deserves. |

Knowledgeable: The candidate should be able to demonstrate general knowledge inherent in a liberal arts curriculum, advanced knowledge in content areas, and specific knowledge in professional education for the implementation of transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Diffusion and Adoption Paper Conceptual Framework Reflection: In my future as an instructional technology specialist, it will be necessary that I remain knowledgeable in areas concerning technology, for which I will most likely be responsible for the training and adoption processes. Using this paper as an example, it is important that I take note as to what made this a smooth transition and what could have been done to make it better. It is these elements that I will need to be well versed. |
b. Apply strategies for and knowledge of issues related to managing the change process in schools. |
Decisive: The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills when making decisions that will influence effective transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Evaluation Plan NETS Reflection: This evaluation project will be part of the decision process regarding the continued use of the Study Island program. Taking what I have learned in this particular course and applying it to a real work related issue makes it an extremely valuable assignment. It is not just a theoretical paper but actual work that will have an effect on school resources. Conceptual Framework Reflection: I find that when evaluating materials for use in a school or school system, a characteristic you must have is the ability to make well informed decisions. Your decisions will affect the decisions made by administrators and other faculty that value your opinion. It is important to stress the knowledge part of being decisive. Your decisions should always be based on sound research and practicality. |
c. Apply effective group process skills. |
Empathetic: The candidate should be able to develop the sensitivity for individual, family, and institutional needs that will embrace transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Mentor Letter Conceptual Framework Reflection: This letter also showed the importance of being empathetic. To place yourself in the shoes of another and help them as you would like to be helped. This type of sensitivity is invaluable to work done with peers, students, and the community. |
d. Lead in the development and evaluation of district technology planning and implementation. |
Collaborative: The candidate should be able to develop skills to work effectively with various stakeholders involved in the educational process that will bring about transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Interview Stakeholders Project Conceptual Framework Reflection: Before leading in the development of district level planning and implementation, I feel that to not have a solid understanding of the stakeholders would be tragic. While ultimately there will exist some form of monetary restraint, I would like to think that the students would be involved in the planning process. It is this collaboration between stakeholders at all levels that can result in the best decisions being made. |
e. Engage in supervised field-based experiences with accomplished technology facilitators and/or directors. |
Proactive: The candidate should be able to advocate for the removal of barriers that impede lifelong learning and hinder transformational systemic change. |
Artifact: Interview Media Specialist Conceptual Framework Reflection: Being proactive is much better than being reactive. Meeting with technology facilitators and directors about how best to serve the student populations in terms of increasing technology literacy, should be something that is done proactively. We do not want our students to fall behind the rest of the world, in which case we would have to become reactive. It is always best to anticipate and do something to meet our goals now. |
