Educational technology leaders will facilitate development of a shared vision for comprehensive integration of technology and foster an environment and culture conducive to the realization of the vision. Educational technology leaders:
a. Identify and apply educational and technology-related research, the psychology of learning, and instructional design principles in guiding the use of computers and technology in education.
Artifact: Diffusion and Adoption Paper
Course: MEDT 8467
Semester: Spring 2009
NETS Reflection: This paper dealt with the adoption and implementation of the student information system, Infinite Campus, within our school system. This system had many benefits that the previous system was lacking, such as the student and parent portal which allows the accessing of grades from home. Since it is a web based application, this also aloud teachers to work from home. The focus of the paper was on the adoption process and what made it successful. This is important because before implementing any new technology, the processes involved with a successful implementation must be understood. For example, it was important to let the faculty understand the benefits of making the switch. If you do not win over the users of the technology, then it can be doomed to failure. This is only one aspect, but a good example of the principles of change that were involved. As a future instructional technology specialist I will no doubt be involved with future decisions and adoptions of new programs and technologies, making these principles well worth remembering.
b. Apply strategies for and knowledge of issues related to managing the change process in schools.
Artifact: Evaluation Plan
Course: MEDT 8480
Semester: Spring 2010
NETS Reflection: This evaluation project will be part of the decision process regarding the continued use of the Study Island program. Taking what I have learned in this particular course and applying it to a real work related issue makes it an extremely valuable assignment. It is not just a theoretical paper but actual work that will have an effect on school resources.
c. Apply effective group process skills.
Artifact: Mentor Letter
Course: CEPD 8102
Semester: Fall 2009
NETS Reflection: For this assignment I wrote a letter meant for new teachers at the school where I teach. I believe it showed how one must be towards those less experienced. I remember how overwhelmed I felt my first year and I was thankful for my fellow teachers who took the time to help me along. I believe this applies to group process skills in that you will often work with those who are more and less experienced as yourself. It is good form to show sensitivity and courtesy to both.
d. Lead in the development and evaluation of district technology planning and implementation.
Artifact: Interview Stakeholders Project
Course: MEDT 8467
Semester: Spring 2009
NETS Reflection: When taking a lead role in the development of technology planning and implementation, it would only make sense to start with the stakeholders. This assignment was done to assess what the students thought about technology integration within the school. In my opinion, this would be the place to begin before one could develop a sound technology plan. It is the students who will use the technology and ultimately have the most at stake. It is people in school now who will need these technology skills in the future.
e. Engage in supervised field-based experiences with accomplished technology facilitators and/or directors.
Artifact: Interview Media Specialist
Course: MEDT 8467
Semester: Spring 2009
NETS Reflection: This assignment was an interview done with our school's media specialist. I was asking her opinion on the level of technology integration within our school. It is valuable to interact with those whom have been working in the technology field longer than oneself. They can offer insight into the system and offer advice on how best to go about tasks, like writing grants or obtaining permission to acquire some new equipment. I currently serve on the technology committee with the media specialist in my school. However, with the recent economic problems in the country most of our ideas will most likely be put on hold.
