Lets discuss Science Fiction

The "read . write. think" site defines science fiction as stories that “tell about science and technology of the future.” His basic definition has been expanded by many writers to include stories about space and time travel, different galaxies, out of space aliens, future of earth, and alternate time dimensions. The possibility of “what if?” defines the stories.

The element of alternative time is used in the “Pendragon” series.  This series by D.J. MacHale sends the present day main characters through a time portal. The characters, called Travelers, move between time dimensions and locations.  Each book begins with a quest to solve a pressing social problem for various societies.

When the writer has humans fighting aliens, it is often for the survival of earth. These stories frequently use other life form from distant planets or galaxies to invade earth. The defenders of earth are called upon to use wits, imagination and available technology to fight off the invaders. Protecting the “good” earth form the “evil” aliens has become a popular story line. The "Tripods" by John Christopher is an example of this theme.

Science fiction uses current science and technology and imagines how it will develop over time.  The writer predicts how things will reasonably work in the future. The goal is to make the story believable as the technology advances.  The “Uglies” series by Scott Westerfeld shows what happens when society tries to engineer perfection. The social dilemma of a controlled society is explored through these books
