España is the only country in Europe that speaks Spanish. It is the country that sponsored Christopher Columbus' exploration to the new world. When Christopher Columbus arrived in the new world, he landed in the Caribbean. He claimed the Dominican Republic and Cuba for Spain.

During his next 3 voyages, he continued westward and claimed land for Spain in South and Central America. This is why the majority of countries in Central and South America speak Spanish! Columbus found the new world, and brought the culture and language of the country that sponsored his voyages. Christopher Columbus is known as a hero in Spain, and there are many monuments and statues of him in Spain and in the world. He is known as Cristobal Colon in Spanish.
