Guilds

A guild system was in place in Renaissance society. To do a certain job, men would have to join a guild. They would study under and eventually become a master in their field. In Medieval society, women had been allowed to join guilds. There were some guilds that only allowed in women. But shifts in the structure of the economy began to exclude women from guilds. Men began to take the artisan fields that women had once dominated. Society began more and more to put women exclusively into the private sphere. Upper class women were expected to remain in the private sphere.
