Women in Renaissance Society

During the Renaissance, society viewed women differently than it did men. Women were expected to be virtuous, docile wives and mothers. Working, as an artist for example, was not something women were expected to do. This was possible for upper class women, but lower class women would have had to work to survive. While women worked in the public during the middle ages, the guilds began to edge women out of jobs. While women were being pushed out of the public sphere, the rise in Humanism meant they were able to enrich their lives in the private sphere through education.
