The segregated city of Albany embarked on a movement within the Civil Rights movement, which would later be recognized as the Albany Movement in 1961. This was formed when several local black organizations merged together to increase an ongoing voter-registration effort in the African-American community.
Their platform was to end segregation by negotiation as opposed to demonstration and violence, a concept that was increasing in several other cities.
