Introduction

European Environmental Concerns is a curriculum web that is an introductory lesson on the environmental issues of the Earth.  Europeans in Germany, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom face various types of pollution everyday and this lesson seeks to elaborate on what these issues are and how these countries have acted to combat pollution.

Aim

The aim of this curriculum web is to make the student aware of global environmental issues, help them understand the concerns faced by three European countries, and to encourage them to find solutions to those environmental concerns.

Rationale

In order to meet standard SS6G9 (The student will discuss environmental issues in Europe), we must discuss the causes of pollution and various environmental issues in Europe throughout this unit of study.  This topic is particularly relevant, as it is becoming more and more common to hear discussions of humanity's affect on the Earth in the news.  To promote the welfare of all people and places we must all do our part to become educated as to how each of us can do our part to help maintain our planet.  This is not just an issue Europe faces and is an intrinsically relevant topic in the Social Studies classroom.

Learners

The activities presented in this lesson are appropriate for 6th grade Social Studies students, particularly in the public school system of the state of Georgia.  It could easily be modified to fit the curriculum of 7th grade Social Studies students in Georgia, as well as anyone desiring to enlighten young people on the benefits of understanding the need to protect the environment.
