An Explanation for the Descriptor “Decision Maker”

Educators should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills when making decisions that will influence effective transformational systemic change. The ability to make decisions is a critical component of continuous school improvement. Because the decision making process plays an integral role in motivation, communication, leadership, and organizational change (Luneburg & Ornstein, 1999), it is vital that educators are able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in effective decision making. Making decisions with increased student learning in mind empowers educators to allocate resources effectively to programs and students (Hartman & Boyd, 1998). Critical to transformational systemic change is the educator’s knowledge of how best to function within constraints of available school resources. This heightened ability for allocating resources in turn resolves ethical dilemmas that are a normal and routine part of educational decision making (Strike, 1998).
Presentation of Evidence That Portrays My Role As A Decision Maker:

Click "Mane" Idea to view me as a decision maker.

In Block IV of my internship I taught main idea to fifth graders.  Main Idea could have been taught by having students read a paragraph and identify the main idea of it.  I knew I wanted to teach this in a fun yet beneficial manner.  For me, this topic was challenging to think of activities that would be fun and educational.  I did lots of online and textual searching.  After some research, I found several activities that would allow students to read, discuss, and move throughout the classroom.  I modified the lessons/activities I found, to fit my teaching style and desired goals for my students.

Before this lesson even took place I had to make decision.  I could have resorted to back to the text book, but I made a decision from the beginning that I would make this topic interesting.  The lesson went great, and my students energetically and enthusiastically participated.  This lesson showed motivation and leadership which are vital keys to decision making.

Click Astonishing Antonyms to view me demonstrating that I am a decision maker.

During my internship I taught Astonishing Antonyms as part of my unit.  This lesson on antonyms could be compared to a word wall.  Students, along with the teacher, are continually adding antonyms to the words listed on the baggies.  Students enjoy reviewing the words and learning ones that are not familiar to them.  I wanted to do a lesson that we could continually build on and would be somewhat repetitious.

This lesson shows that I am a decision maker because I designed and decided to do an activity that would be repetitious, fun, and educational.  I feel my decision about this lesson played a critical role in student motivation, leadership among students, and generated good communication.

Click Rhyming Mud Words to view me being a decision maker.

In Block I, while in a kindergarten class at H. A. Jones Elementary, I created a lesson on rhyming words.  This lesson shows that I am a decision maker because I decided on a topic that could be used and crossed over into several subject areas.  I decided on the words that would be used and that were related to their sight words.  I also decided on the hands-on activity which influenced and increased learning.  All of these skills demonstrated during this lesson are instrumental to being a good decision maker.
