An Explanation for the Descriptor “Collaborative” |
Educators should be able to develop skills to work effectively with various stakeholders involved in the educational process that will bring about transformational systemic change. As the roles and responsibilities of school professionals change and student diversity continues to increase, there is an expectation that educators will work directly with one another to educate students (Rainforth, 1997). Educators currently are working in interdisciplinary, subject, and grade level teams. In order to participate fully on these collaborative teams, educators need to acquire and possess certain skills. Educators who are collaborative facilitate effective communication, cooperation, and coordination with other school professionals, parents, and families (Dettmer, Dyck, & Thurston, 1997). They promote professional interactions between and among professionals, parents, and families to further commonly agreed upon goals that are in the best interest of students (Mostert, 1998). These educators demonstrate the ability to share jointly resources and knowledge, use effective decision making/problem solving skills, and develop effective interventions to meet the educational needs of students (Turnbull &Turnbull, 1997). |
Presentation of Evidence That
Portrays My Role As Collaborative: Click Reading Clinic Case Study to view my role as collaborative. During Block III, I worked with Becky Bickford and two fifth grade students every Monday night in the Children Development Center at UWG. Becky and I both tutored two students in reading. We developed a lesson plan for every Monday night to help remediate the student's reading problems. We did read-alouds, cloze passages, phonics games, and online interaction games to help increase their reading abilities. These are just a few of the activities we did throughout Reading Clinic. Becky and I worked directly with one another to educate our two students and did this very well. We agreed upon goals that were in the best interest of our clients, and we shared resources along with our own personal knowledge in order to develop effective intervention to meet the educational needs of our students.
Click ABC Book to view my pictures of collaboration. During Block III we had to create an alphabet book in our READ 4253 class. During this class we were placed into groups consisting of eight people. Together, we had to pick a children's chapter book to read and from that pick a theme for our alphabet book. We chose to read the book, Pictures of Hollis Woods, and this book deals a lot with art. Art is the theme we picked for our ABC book. After we picked our theme, we came together and collaborated on what art words would represent the letters in our book. Once we came to terms on which words would represent each letter, we divided up the letters and began our research based on what we decided each letter would represent.
Click Cardinal Directions to view my lesson of me being collaborative. In Block II while at Ithica Elementary, I collaborated with other student teachers to create this lesson on cardinal directions. This lesson has students use problem solving skills which are continuously needed throughout life. This lesson shows that I am collaborative because I was able to research and compile information with the help of other student teachers in an effective manner. We shared resources and knowledge in order to educate students. This lesson indicates that I am collaborative because of communication, cooperation, and coordination with other school professionals.
Click Calendars/Timelines to view my history lesson of me being collaborative. During Block II, I had to teach eight lesson plans. Calendars/Timelines is one of the eight I developed. I collaborated with my supervising teacher at Ithica Elementary to develop a lesson on calendars and people in history. She suggested I teach using a Studies Weekly. I used the Studies Weekly, added a discussion, and a few hands-on activities to the lesson. Students enjoyed the lesson, and it showed how I could collaborate with another teacher in order to increase student outcomes.
