Project Information

This course was undertaken in the Summer Semester of 2009 as a directed study project overseen by Dr. Lewis Baumstark.  the purpose of the project was to make an objective visual representation of the United States Legal Code in its entirety.  For more information on the treemapping you can read Here and Here .  For more information on XML you can read Here and Here.

Specialized software used for this project included:
  • Treemap 4.1
    • More details can be found Here.

See the included source code and the comments contained therein for more details on how the program was intended to function.  The included write-up also provides a great deal of insight as to what this program was intended to do and about the project itself.  Both of these items can be found in the project artifacts section.

Project Artifacts

  • Version 1.0 of the C# source code is Available Here.

  • A write-up detailing the successes and failures of the project, as well
as plans for a Version 2.0 of the project (in Ruby), is Available Here.

Project Assessment

The project afforded the invaluable opportunity to learn about several things:
  • Treemapping
  • Complexity Measures
  • XML
This project/directed study provided an excellent opportunity to learn many new things, as enumerated above, and Dr. Baumstark proved and excellent overseer for this as he closely tracked the project in all of its iterations and provided essential knowledge to overcome roadblocks that might have otherwise halted progress.
