Introduction

How does weather effect our daily lives?

Weather is what it is like outside as it relates to temperature, wind, moisture, pressure and cloudiness.
There are many different types of weather we experience.  Watch the online video below to see different types of weather we will be learning about.

Standards

S1CS3. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities.
a. Use ordinary hand tools and instruments to construct, measure, and look at objects.
b. Make something that can actually be used to perform a task, using paper, cardboard, wood, plastic, metal, or existing objects.
c. Identify and practice accepted safety procedures in manipulating science materials and equipment.

Earth Science
S1E1. Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see patterns in weather and climate.
a. Identify different types of weather and the characteristics of each type.
b. Investigate weather by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal or on a calendar seasonally.
c. Correlate weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) to seasonal changes.

Task

With a partner, you will read about weather, answer questions and complete activities about weather.  When you have finished, you will have resources to discuss different types of weather and different ways to measure weather.

Process

1.  Go to the following website and read about weather.  Weather Wiz Kids.  Print out the Weather Words sheet.  Fill in the 8 bubbles with weather words that you found on the website.  Try and find different types of weather.  Once you and your partner fill in the bubbles on your sheets.  Compare the words each of you found and talk about the different types of weather.  Look at Weather Terms sheet and compare your weather words to the weather words we are going to discussing in class.

2.  Play the online Weather Game.  You will be changing the temperature and humidity to create weather.  Work together and have fun!  Now dress the bear for the weather outside!  Make sure to look at the temperature and the weather outside the house!  Dress the Bear

3.  Go to Weather Instruments and read about the different weather instruments used to collect data about weather.  Print out Weather Instruments and complete the sheet.  You may use the website to help you find the answers.

4.  Go to our weather table and create 1 weather instrument using our recycled materials.  Be prepared to share with the class what you have made and what it does.  Use your weather instrument sheets and drawings to help you.  Discuss with your partner the instrument you have made and the purpose of the instrument.

5.  This assignment is on-going.  Print out Weather Data and glue down in your science journal.  You are going to record what the weather is like outside for 4 weeks.  After that four weeks, we are going to graph our findings and discuss the data we have collected.

        Additional resources you may use!!

        Dictionary

Evaluation

When you have completed all the activities, I would like for you to write in your journal what you have learned about weather and weather instruments.  Include weather terms and descriptions.  You may add pictures to help you explain what your journal entry.  Your journal entry will be graded with the following  Rubric.

Conclusion

Congratulations on completing your WebQuest!  We will use the knowledge that we have learned to continue our weather study and take it further!  You are now a Junior Weather Reporter!!
