Before you begin...

...you and three other classmates will form a tribe. Your tribe must choose a group name. Your tribe's name must either be a plant or an animal from the rainforest. Your home will be the Amazon rainforest in South America. After you have chosen your group, each group member will be assigned a title. Each group member will have two specific tasks, a research task and a powerpoint task.

The four titles are:

  • Tribal Environmentalist
  • Tribal Zoologist
  • Tribal Anthropologist
  • Tribal Conservationist

Your task has three parts:

Part I. Research

1. Tribal Environmentalist -

Step 1. This group member will research the environment of the Amazon rainforest.

Step2. After doing this research, the Tribe's environmentalist will prepare THREE (3) slidesabout the environment of the Amazon for your group's powerpoint.

Don't forget to have this information somewhere in those three slides...
A. Why is the rainforest called the rainforest?
B. Is the Amazon rainforest a tropical or temperate rainforest?

C. What are the names of the different sections of the rainforest.
D. What is the average rainfall of in the amazon rainforest?
E. What kinds of plants grow in the Amazon rainforest?

2. Tribal Zoologist -

Step 1. This group member researches the animals that live in your home, the Amazon Rainforest.

Step 2. After doing this research, the Tribe's zoologist will create THREE (3) slides about the animals in the rainforest for your group's powerpoint presentation.

Don't forget to have this information somewhere in those three slides...

A. What types of animals live in the different levels of the rainforest?

B. Are there any animals in danger of extinction?

C. How do animals protect themselves in the Amazon.

D. Specifically profile THREE different animals from the Amazon, 1 Mammal, 1 Reptile, and 1 Bird.

3. Tribal Anthropologist -

Step1. The Tribe's anthopologist will research the people that live in the Amazon Rainforest.

Step 2. after doing this research the anthropologist will create THREE (3) slides about the people of the Amazon for your group's PowerPoint presentation.

Also...

.... One of the slides that the anthropologist creates must tell about your group's specific tribe. The anthropologist will coloborate with the other group members
to decide three things:

1. Does your tribe still live in the rainforest or have you decided to move to a city outside of the rainforest.

2. Has your tribe decided to have contact with the outside world, or does your tribe prefer to be isolated?

3. Do you hunt for most of your food or have you decided to take on more Western eating habits?

Tribal Anthropologist's Research:

1. Who Lives in the Amazon?
2. People of the Amazon Rainforest.
3. Amazon People

4. Tribe Conservationist -

Step 1. As tribe conservationist, you will research the factors that are destroying the Amazon rainforest.

Step 2. After you research these factors you will create THREE (3) slides with this information for your groups.

Don't forget to have this information somewhere in those three slides...

A. What is slash and burn?

B. What are two things some people doing to survive in the amazon?

C. What can we do to help stop the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest?

Part II: Presentation

Know you have done your research and your slides. Before the group presents, everyone must compile their slides and the group must create an introductory slide with the group name, the date, and the names of the group members (with titles!). Also, make sure there are between 5-7 pictures in your presentation.

On the day of your presentation, your group will present your powerpoint. After presenting your powerpoint, each member member will give their reason of why your home (the Amazon) is important to the rest of the world and why it should be saved. Each member's reasons should be based on his or her research in his or her area. Each member of the tribe should print a copy of this guidline to follow for his or her oral portion.

Part III: Mural

The mural is a classwide project. All the tribes in the class will join together and pose a united front in order to create a mural that shows the wonders of the Amazon.

  • The Environmentalist from each group will join together to draw the trees and plants of the Amazon.
  • The Zoologists from each group will join together to draw the animals of the Amazon.
  • The Anthropologists from each group will join together to draw the people of the Amazon.
  • The Conservationists from each group will join together to create the colorful recycled tiles that go around the border of the mural.
