Repairing "The Outsiders"

Introduction

The feud between the Greasers and Socs must be stopped! Help these gangs from The Outsiders to resolve their differences and develop a plan for the future.

The hatred between the social groups must end. As we are all aware the latest fight between the Socs and the Greasers has cost lives. In an attempt to bring peace to our city, the Tulsa City Council has asked our class to brainstorm summer camp options. The city council believes that if all Greasers and Socs are forced to attend summer camp together it might finally bring an end to this ancient grudge.

Essential Questions:

1) How do our personal experiences shape the way we see ourselves?

2) What creates prejudice and what can we do as individuals to overcome it?

3) How can we create an environment that will facilitate improved relations between two distinct social groups?

The Task

As a group you will be responsible for creating a brochure highlighting your summer camp. You will need to decide on activities, location, details, and rules for a summer camp. Each group in our class will have at least one Greaser and one Soc. Remember your goal is to bring peace to the city of Tulsa, OK. We are all counting on your expertise to help our city with this crisis.

You will use Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Publisher to create your brochure.

The Process

Task 1.

Form groups of 2 to 3.

Each member of the group will choose a character from the novel. At least one group member must pick a Greaser and one must pick a Soc. The third member can pick either way.

Socs:	Cherry	Randy	Marcia	Bob	Buck
Greasers:	Ponyboy	Soda	Darry	Two-Bit	Dally

After choosing a character, write a description of your character choice.

Task 2.

Using the links below, research other camps. Take notes paying attention to the following topics:

Various camp activities
Daily schedules of other camps
Rules and guidelines
Items the campers bring
What each camp has (location, facilities, etc)

Evaluation

The group will earn a possible 25 points for the final brochure. Please review the following rubric. Extra points can be earned individually based on observed participation. Work together well, have fun and put together an effective brochure.

Conclusion

Putting yourselves into the characters of "The Outsiders" and trying to imagine what sort of camp would create an atmosphere of harmony is a challenging task. Understanding the needs and desires of others requires empathy. Can you think of times when being good at understanding other peoples feelings would be helpful?
