Introduction
Georgia's Government has developed over time beginning with the founding of the Colony of Georgia in 1732. At that time the government of Georgia was much like the British government. After the revolutionary war the state government was much more like the United States Federal Government.
Georgia has a strong executive branch which is run by the Governor. It also has a General Assembly which is a bicameral legislature. Bicameral mean that there are two houses of government a Senate and a House of Representatives.
Georgia's judicial system consists of ascending levels of courts with the most important being the superior court. Georgia also has a circuit court system as well as a court of appeals.
Local government is very important in Georgia. The state constitution limits the number of county governments to 159 but does not limit city and other special district governmental systems.
