b. Compute the surface area of right rectangular prisms using formulae
d. Solve application problems involving surface area of right rectangular prisms

Introduction
Your group has recently been hired by Ms. Smith to paint a room in her house that is 15 feet long by 14 feet wide by 8 feet high.  Ms. Smith only has a limited budget for paint and supplies so your calculations must be accurate.

Task
Your group is responsible for creating a poster board with all correct calculations and formulas, a drawing of the room and its dimensions, and the costs associated with completing the project. The poster board should be neat and well put together.

Process
Before beginning this project, your group should research the surface area of rectangular prisms using the following websites. Be sure to take notes on what you find and complete any interactive activities.

Once your group has idea of what surface area is and how to find it, you may begin on the next steps.

  1. One wall has a door that is 8’X 7’ and a window that is 3’ X 4’. Another wall has two windows that are also 3’ X 4’.
  2. Calculate the surface area of the room assuming that you will not paint the windows or door.
  3. A gallon of paint will cover about 400 ft2 of space.  How many gallons of paint will you need?
  4. Go to the following website and determine how much you will spend purchasing the paint, two brushes, 1 paint tray, and a drop cloth. http://www.lowes.com
  5. Using graph paper, complete a model drawing of your room with the measurements included.
