MEDT 8484 Research Seminar 1
I completed the course Research Seminar 1 in my ED.S in Instructional Technology. I learned how to fairly conduct research. I also learned how to be a consumer of research, and carefully evaluate the research I read.
On this page you will find my philosophy of research, and links to the following assignments: Certificate for Human Participants Protection Education, Article Review Chart, Literature Review Map, Literature Review Research Project, and Reflective Essay.
Philosophy of Research
There are two ways that I can improve my teaching and learning. The first is I by reading research done by researchers. Galileo and ERIC are excellent starting points for beginning my research as they offer full-text peer-reviewed articles for free. Second, I can conduct research on topics of interest to me. I would like to begin a cohort longitudinal study to determine the long-term effects of inclusion into the gifted and talented program at my school. The research method that is best suited to my research idea is a longitudinal cohort study. Another idea for research would be to study the results of adding 21st Century technology into the classrooms. This summer my school is being outfitted with MOBIs, projectors, and hand-held responders. I would like to see if the age of the teacher impacts the use of these 21st Century tools. The research could be conducted by case studies. My research ideas related to national needs for improvement in teaching and learning because Georgia has a technology plan to “ increase educators proficiency in effective instructional uses of technology in order to incorporate 21st Century technology and thinking skills into the Georgia curriculum” (Georgia Technology Plan 2007-2012, p. 94). Currently, I see many teachers who are quite hesitant to incorporate technology into the classroom. This is in complete disregard to the Georgia Technology Plan that educators are expected to implement. Many schools are not assessing technology literacy. “Based on these results, school systems need technical assistance in implementing strategies targeted toward improving and assessing technology literacy” (Georgia Technology Plan 2007-2012, p. 90). Reading others' research and conducting my own research will improve my teaching and my students' learning.
