THE 5-17s
and
surroundings
Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to
destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to
fulfil.”
Mark 5:
15 Then they came to
Jesus, and saw
the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion,
sitting and
clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.
16 And those who saw it
told them how
it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the
swine.
17 Then they began to
plead with Him
to depart from their region.
18 And when He got into the boat, he who had
been
demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.
19 However, Jesus did not
permit him,
but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great
things the
Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”
20 And he departed and
began to
proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus
had done
for him; and all marveled.
Luke 5:
15 However, the report
went around
concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to
hear, and to
be healed by Him of their infirmities.
16 So He Himself often
withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.
17 Now it happened on a
certain day,
as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law
sitting
by, who had come out of every town of Galilee,
Judea, and Jerusalem.
And the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
18 Then behold, men
brought on a bed
a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before
Him.
19 And when they could
not find how
they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the
housetop and
let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst
before
Jesus.
20 When He saw their faith, He said to him,
“Man, your
sins are forgiven you.”
John 5:
16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus,
and sought
to kill Him,[c] because He had done these things
on the
Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My
Father has been
working until now, and I have been working.”
18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to
kill Him,
because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His
Father,
making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus
answered
and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing
of
Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son
also
does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves
the Son,
and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him
greater
works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For
as the
Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son
gives
life to whom He will. 22 For the Father
judges no one,
but has committed all judgment to the Son, 23
that all
should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not
honor the
Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Acts 5:
Continuing Power in the Church
12 And through the hands of
the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And
they were
all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13
Yet none of
the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. 14
And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both
men and
women, 15 so that they brought the sick out
into the
streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the
shadow of
Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16
Also a
multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and
those who
were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
Imprisoned Apostles Freed
17 Then the high priest rose
up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the
Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, 18
and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison.
19 But at night an angel of the Lord opened
the prison doors
and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand
in the
temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”
21 And when they heard that, they
entered the
temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest and those
with him
came and called the council together, with all the elders of the
children of Israel,
and sent to the prison to have them brought.
Romans 5:
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12 Therefore, just as
through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus
death
spread to all men, because all sinned— 13
(For until the
law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over those
who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of
Adam, who
is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the
free gift is
not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much
more the
grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ,
abounded
to many. 16 And the gift is not like that
which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which
came
from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which
came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much
more those
who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will
reign in
life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment
came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one
Man’s
righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in
justification
of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience
many were
made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made
righteous.
20 Moreover the law entered that the offense
might
abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21
so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through
righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:
Be reconciled To
God
12 For we do not commend
ourselves again to you, but give you opportunity to boast on our
behalf, that
you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and
not in
heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it
is
for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14
For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One
died for
all, then all died; 15 and He died for all,
that those
who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for
them
and rose again.
16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one
according to
the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet
now we
know Him thus no longer.
17 Therefore, if anyone is
in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away;
behold,
all things have become new.
18 Now all things are
of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has
given us
the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is,
that God was
in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their
trespasses to
them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as
though
God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s
behalf, be
reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who
knew no sin to
be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Walking in the Spirit
Galatians 5:
16 I say then: Walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusts
against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are
contrary to
one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
18 But if you are led by the
Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident,
which are:
adultery,[c] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
20 idolatry, sorcery,
hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions,
dissensions, heresies,
21 envy, murders,[d] drunkenness, revelries, and the
like; of
which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time
past, that
those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23
gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
24 And those who are Christ’s have
crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires.
25 If
we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the
Spirit.
26 Let us not become
conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
Ephesians 5: Walk
in Wisdom
15 See then that you walk
circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,
16
redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand
what the
will of the Lord is.
18 And do
not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the
Spirit,
19
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and
making melody in your heart to the Lord,
20 giving thanks
always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ,
21
submitting to one another in the fear of God
1 Thessalonians 5:
12 And we urge you,
brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in
the Lord
and admonish you,
13
and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at
peace among
yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who
are
unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
15 See that no one
renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both
for
yourselves and for all.
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 in everything give thanks; for this
is the will of God in
Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20
Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things;
hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form
of evil.
23 Now may the God of peace
Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and
body be
preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who
calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle
be read to
all the holy[a] brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
with
you. Amen.
1 Timothy 5:17 “Let the elders who rule well be counted
worthy of
double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.”
James 5:
13 Is anyone among you
suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him
call for the elders of
the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the
name of
the Lord.
15 And the prayer of faith will save
the sick, and the Lord
will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses[e] to one another, and pray for one
another,
that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous
man avails
much.
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like
ours, and he
prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the
land for
three years and six months. 18 And he prayed
again, and
the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
19
Brethren, if anyone
among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,
20 let
him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save
a soul
from death and cover a multitude of sins.
1 John 5:
14 Now this is the
confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to
His will,
He hears us.
15 And if
we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the
petitions
that we have asked of Him.
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which
does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him
life for
those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading
to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not
leading
to death.
Proverbs 5:21 “For the ways of man are before the
eyes of
the Lord and He ponders all His paths.”
John 5:21 “For as the Father raises the dead and
gives life
to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For He hath made Him to be sin
for us,
who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God In Him.”
Ephesians 5:21 “Submitting yourselves one to
another in the
fear of God.”
1 Thessalonians 5:21 “Test all things; hold fast
what is
good.”
1 John 5:21 “Little Children, Keep yourselves from
idols.”
