My Educational Philosophy
Leah Goodnoe
Students should be learning the basics in their classes;
I believe that all students are capable of anything they put their mind to and can learn, but they must be challenged. Students have a need for self-worth and self-esteem; it is my job to ensure students that these internal feelings/emotions are met. Students will go further and do better in school if they know that I genuinely care about them and the work they do. I have high expectations for my students, and by having high expectations results in high achievement. Never give up on your students! I believe the development of good character, integrity, moral soundness, and work ethic is essential to student success. I feel that self-disciplined is essential for success, achievement, and a well-functioning society. Student’s personal growth is enhanced by opportunities to make choices, and by developing problem-solving skills through critical and creative thinking.
My dream is to be an extraordinary teacher,
where students beg their parents to have them placed into my class. I
want to have a classroom where my students are excited about learning, goals
and objectives are met and, I am a fun teacher. As a teacher I must
create this idea I have in my head. I am not going to walk into the
classroom and have this idea handed to me. It is a goal that I will have to work or
strive for everyday. I will be able to create my dream classroom
with hard work and perseverance. When influencing a child’s life, there
are several aspects in which must be considered: the classroom environment,
teachers/teaching, and learning/learners.
If all these aspects are met then the students
will be influenced, and will have learned.
Teachers should create a calm, consistent, structured environment for their students. I want my student’s to have procedural knowledge, so they could run the class by themselves if I was not there. I look forward to implementing the community model combined with the reality therapy model in my room and among my students. These models will encourage students to work together, help one another, and to put a stop to some of the competitiveness. These models allow students to have more empathy towards one another. This is the environment I wish to have: an environment where students and the teacher are empathic towards one another, inside and outside the classroom. Teachers can make learners feel self-confident, accomplished, and empowered; I will work to create and combine these environments so it is apparent; my students will internally know what I expect.
I want my classroom to have a unique feel about it. I would like very much for my room to look fun, bright, colorful, and exciting. I know if this environment exist then I will be comfortable and, if I am comfortable then my students will be comfortable. The environment I desire is one where my students respect me and I respect them. I want to “keep it tight” and not allow them to run all over me. If I use assertive discipline and positive reinforce with my students I believe I will create the environment and class I am looking for.
I also want my classroom environment to feel open and welcoming to parents. If I have parent involvement, it will help the child in many aspects. Usually the teacher and the parents want the child to be successful. The teacher, student, and parent must put forward the effort to help the communication process. If the parents are involved with the schooling process then communication between home and school are more related. Teachers usually want what is best for their students and so do the parents. By having parent involvement, I think schooling is more complete because students can take what they learn from school to home, and what they learn at home to school. Parent involvement promotes and supports education at home. This helps teaches because what is being taught at school is also being taught at home; this allows the student to grow and, what the educator teaches will not be done in vain.
Teachers implement a mark on each individual student; this mark the students will carry for the rest of their lives. I believe teachers can make or break a student when it comes to school. Teachers should be well trained before entering the classroom. Teachers also need to be open and friendly toward students and co-workers. How a teacher acts and behaves sets an example for many students. A teacher should and needs to be a role model. The teacher needs to treat the students how she would want to be treated. If he or she would not want to be treated or talked to in a particular way, then do not do it to the students.
Schools need teachers that are knowledgeable, helpful, and open minded. Teachers have got to be open to new ideas and styles, especially when it comes to teaching certain topics. Many students are vulnerable to certain issues, and a teacher needs to be prepared to face these obstacles. The world is constantly changing, and teachers must adjust and modify themselves at times to give students the best education possible. Be adaptable!
Teacher’s need to teach in a cool, creative, and understanding manner. To educate in this manner, instructor’s need to do three types of planning: long range planning, mid-range planning, and short range planning. Professors do very well with short range planning, but struggle with long range planning. Teachers must plan the long range goals so the short range goals will all tie in together. I hope to sit down at the beginning of the school year and write down exactly what I will do for the entire year. That way I will know what mid-range and short range plans to do and how to arrange them. I believe it will help me and my students in the long run. Think, year round learning!
When I become a teacher, I want to teach and
use interdisciplinary units, literature based instruction, and learning
centers. Each of these are important to the
students and will help them grow in their educational status. Each of the
items listed above help students develop and figure out who they are and some
of the things they like to do. I feel that interdisciplinary units,
literature based instruction, and learning centers make learning exciting and
hands on. These teaching techniques allow students to move beyond the
typical school work, which some students find boring. To do all of these
things I will need to step back and take time for reflection and to plan.
Teachers should be able to give themselves an honest, wide-ranging
analysis. I believe reflection will help me develop, personally and
professionally, to become a better teacher for my students. It is crucial that I
consistently strive to become a better teacher.
The type of classroom environment I’d like to create for my future students is a total learning atmosphere. I wish for my students to be in a challenging, organized, yet fun environment. I believe teachers can create this environment if they use the principles of best practice. These thirteen practices are wonderful for creating that warm, enjoyable, learning environment. Each practice is helpful to the students as well as the teacher. I plan to have these thirteen practices posted near my desk, so I can constantly see them and apply them. I want my students walk away from my classroom and say they have learned something.
It is essential, for students and teachers, that each curricular step leads to the next in a logical building block sense. Teachers should actively participate in curriculum assessments. I also feel that schools or team teachers should coordinate, communicate, and collaborate with one another so everyone is “on the same page”. This helps create similar terminology which is used in a program and throughout the curriculum. Through good communication with other teachers, students learn valuable communication skill and see how critically, valuable they are.
