The students in this first grade class will compare and contrast the life of pilgrims to today’s life by completing a Venn diagram with an accuracy of 5 out of 6.
i) Teaching Sequence: Once the students have made their predications I will read the book Sarah Morton’s Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl by Kate Waters, to them. While reading the book I will ask them how what is taking place is similar or different from our lives today. After reading the book I will explain to the students that they are going to be completing a Venn diagram and I will model how to do it for them. I will also read to them the phrases that they are going to be placing in the Venn diagram.
This lesson will be adapted to accommodate that needs of the students as required.

The students will turn in their Venn diagrams to be graded. The students will also be evaluated through teacher observation.
This lesson connects to the use of graphs and charts.
I could not have asked for this lesson to turn out any better then it did. While reading the book to the class they were asking questions about the things that they did not understand or needed some clarification on. There was one student in particular that wanted to tell the rest of the class what was going to happen next in the book since her EIP reading class had read in that morning. When I told her that it would not be fair to the rest of the class if she did tell them she stopped wanting to tell what was going to take place next. Once I was done reading to the class they were able to tell me how the life of Sarah Morton differs from our lives today. I modeled how to complete the Venn diagram to the class and I read what the different things said that the students were going to place in the Venn diagram. I would teach this lesson again and adapt it to the appropriate grade level.
