  1. Specific Objectives:

The students in this first grade class will

  1. Procedures:
    • Motivation/Getting Their Attention:  To get the attention of the students I will ask them a few questions about how many baby teeth we have, how many adult teeth we have, and if they know of ways that they can take care of them.
    • Tie to previous learning:  This lesson ties to the previous learning of how many teeth we have.

Teaching Sequence:  After starting off the lesson by asking a few questions to get the students, I will introduce the book, How Many Teeth? by Paul Showers, to them and I will have them make a prediction as to what they think that the book is about. After the predictions are made I will read the book to them, while doing so I will ask the class questions about the book. Then we will discuss the book. Once, we have reviewed the book I will join the class on the floor and make a circle. While sitting on the floor I will explain to the class that we are going to be making a model of a mouth. I will as demonstrate to the class how be are going to be making it so that they know how to do it. After the demonstration to I will give each student a bag with a ball of pink playdough and a small paper plate so that they can go to their desk and work. The lima beans that will be used as the teeth will be on a paper plate in the center of each cluster of desks.

    • Closure:  To conclude the lesson I will have the students tell me some thing that they learned for the lesson.
    • Transition:  Once the students have finished making their model mouths they will be placed in a zip-lock bag with their name on it and the students will line up for recess.

  1. Lesson Adaptations: For the students that need assistance the appropriate assistance will be given.

  1. Technology Integration:  not applicable

  1. Materials:
    • How Many Teeth? by Paul Showers
    • Dried Lima Beans
    • Gallon Size Zip-lock Bags
    • Pick Play dough
    • Small Paper Plates
  2. Evaluations:

The students will be evaluated through teacher observation for participation and attentiveness during the class discussion and the reading of How Many Teeth? by Paul Showers. The teacher will also observe the students creating the model mouths for accuracy and creativity.

  1. Connections:

This lesson can be connected to math by having the students calculate the difference between the number of adult and baby teeth that we have and it can also be connected to science because of the human body.

  1. Reflection:

There were a few students that were not paying attention through out the lesson. I would say their name so that they knew that I noticed them and there were a few that I had to speak to a second time. Those that I spoke to a second time were told that if they could not pay attention then they could go back to their desk and that they would have to sit out of the activity part of the lesson.

I feel as though I did a good job at asking questions throughout the book and after we were done reading the book. Also I made sure that this lesson was very well organized so that there was no time wasted when passing out materials.

This lesson was one that I really like because it allowed the students to use their creativity for example: there was one girl who made her model mouth so that it was missing a few teeth and she said that it had lost its baby teeth and that the adult teeth had not grown in yet. There was another student who found a lima bean that had a dark brown spot on it she said that that “tooth” had a cavity because the person did not take very good care of their teeth.

The one thing that I would change is that I would allow the students to play with the play dough for a couple of minutes before they got to work on the activity because a number of them wanted to play with it since they don’t use it on a regular basis. Other then that there is nothing that I would change about the way that I taught this lesson. I would definitely teach this lesson again.
