An Explanation for the Descriptor "Proactive"

Educators should become effective advocates for the removal of barriers that impede lifelong learning and hinder transformational systemic change.  Reactive educators spend too much time responding to situations that arise in their schools.  As proactivity makes individuals responsible for their actions (Covey, 1990), educators who are proactive cease blaming others and reacting to problems.  To promote lifelong learning in all schools, educators must devote considerable energy to their craft (Kohl, 1998) while spending less time in a responsive, reactive mode.  To truly inspire transformational systemic change, educators must search openly for better ways to reach and serve children (Sergiovnni, 1996).  Therefore, it is vital that all educators take the initiative necessary for lasting school improvement.
