The History of Pine Mountain |
|
According to Kenneth Krakow, author of Georgia Place Names, Pine Mountain began as a small village called Hood. Hood was originally located about one mile south of Pine Mountain at the intersection of Georgia Highway 18 and U.S. 27 in the area now called Chipley Village.
Mrs. Louise C. Barfield writes in History of Harris County Georgia 1827-1961 that Hood was named for Dr. E. C. Hood, one of the promoters of the Columbus and Rome Railroad. The village of Hood moved north when Chipley was established about 1879 by railroad promoter Colonel W.D. Chipley. Chipley changed its name to Pine Mountain in 1958 when Callaway Gardens opened.
According to Mrs. Barfield, former Chipley Mayor J.W. Caldwell remembered when Main Street was built eastward from the rail road tracks. Others built businesses across the tracks, so the town had two business districts. Caldwell was mayor of Chipley for nineteen years.
