DESCRIPTION
The purpose
of this lesson is for students to be introduced to maintaining a
checking
account.Various parts of a check, such
as signature line, written check amount, bank statement reconciliation,
checking account terminology.
OBJECTIVES
With at
least 90% accuracy the students will be able to do the following at the
completion of the lesson:
1. Define new vocabulary terms orally, as
related to a check.
Discuss various items that a check would be written for.
2. Be able to correctly fill out a check and
understand all its
parts.
3. List the checks and deposits in the check
register.
4. Maintain a accurate ledger balance
INSTRUCTION
PLANNED
Traditional:
Teacher-ledlecture, discussion and
observation
Students will enter the classroom and begin by completing a
word search with basic checking account terminology. The
word search will be located in a folder,
labeled assignments, as students enter the room.( 4 minutes)(visual)
Objectives will be given in a handout and discussed orally
with students before the lesson begins. (5 minutes)(auditory, visual)
Body
The lesson
will be introduced by relating it to the upcoming prom and expenses
that are
related to attending the prom.Students
will be encouraged to participate and add expenses they will possibly
incur. (5

Teacher will demonstrate via the overhead projector the
various parts of a check, as related to terminology, how to correctly
fill out
a check and transfer pertinent information to the check register.Students listen and observe as teacher orally
introduces and demonstrates new parts of the check and register.(7

Students will be ask to open a Flickr site,

, where they will find pictures relating to expenses for the upcoming
prom and miscellaneous
expenditures made during the month.Utilizing their checking account packages they will write
all checks
shown in flicker, by date purchased, and record the checks in their
check
registry.The students will have a list
in their folder of deposits made during the month.They will use their calculators to keep a
running total in their check register.The teacher will walk around the room, observe and give
feedback.(20

Upon completion of the activity three students will ask to
come to the overhead and demonstrate how to correctly write one of the
checks
in the lesson.A copy of the completed
ledger will be shown to compare to the students work.(10

Summary/Conclusion
Students will answer orally questions on today’s lesson and
the importance of accurately maintaining a checking account. (5

Students will save their log and work on it next week before
balancing their monthly statement.(informal, objectives 1-4)
Students
will continue to enter checks and deposit in their register for 7 more
days as
warm up activities.Students will then
reconcile their register with their bank statement.Students will also maintain a journal for a
month of actual expenses they occur and income they receive in order to
ad
realistic and practical application to the lesson. (objectives 1-4)
At the end of the lesson we will review the importance of
correctly completing a check, why it is important to list all checks
and
maintain our checkbook.We will also
discuss how expensive it is for a project such as the prom and
introduce
budgeting.(informal)
