In A Coma Nearly A Week28 July 2005 My name is Shonda, I'm 20 years old and last June in 2004 I had an aneurysm rupture on my brain, which led to a stroke. I had no signs or warnings before June 26, 2004. I had just got off work and was sitting at home. Had a terrible headache and couldn't sleep. I got really dizzy and had the feeling that something was wrong. So I woke up mom and she called 911. By the time the ambulance got there, I was already in a coma. They took me to ER where they did a CT scan and found that I had an aneurysm rupture, so they flew me to UK hospital. They did a surgery right away to coil and put stints in. A little while after, I had a stroke that affected my right side. They had to put a trach in my throat so I could breathe as well. I stayed in a coma nearly a week. When I became aware my vision was a bit blurry but I recognized everyone. I couldn't talk or move at all. They were asking me questions and I had to blink once for yes twice for no. I would get very aggravated and cry, but it was just like I was whining because there were no tears present. Some time passed and they moved me to the top floor then to a rehab hospital. At first, I couldn't do anything. they had to work with me a lot one on one. I had physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. I stayed there nearly 3 months before they sent me home. I started outpatient and its going well. I can walk with a cane now, and talk some, but still have a long way to go in recovering. I have faith in God though and am so thankful I survived and have recovered good so far. Discussion, comments, or questions: Shonda S. © Copyright 2005 Shonda S. |
