Our AAA Experience

30 December 2006

My father was diagnosed with 2 abdominal aortic aneurisms in June 2006. He is 53 years old. He suffered from horrible back pain and finally went to the emergency room. He underwent surgery 3 days later. One was the size of a grapefruit and the other an orange.

He smoked for years and has had heart problems for some time now. He had a quadruple bypass when he was only 36. He is doing great physically - he plays gold daily, but mentally he is not doing well.

I was wondering if anyone went through memory loss? He does not remember the experience at all. He had a difficult time after surgery with almost Post Traumatic Stress Disorder like symptoms.

He is very distant, which is not like him at all. He acts very depressed. He quit cold turkey smoking after surgery. I know he misses that, but he knows he can't smoke. The doctor told him that the possibility of one coming back in another location is very highly probable.

He has made comments that he is not sure whether he died or not! My mother and I just don't know what to do. We are not sure if it is a side effect of some of his medicine (they switched him from Lypitor to Vytorin) or if this is normal.
