Today my mother, a 78 year old female with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease entered the hospital for an operation to repair her three abdominal aneurysms that had grown to a size of 4 cm and need repair immediately - her lung doctor was not behind her having this operation, feeling that it was too risky but otherwise she was a walking time bomb.
They took her into the OR at 6:30 and we (my brother, sister, and I) waited all day long to hear that at 11:00 a.m. her repairs were done, and all was going well. Then her bowel somehow got perforated, and she lost massive amounts of blood and had to be transfused.
She remained in the recovery room until 8:00 p.m. that evening and then she was transfered into the Critical Care Unit of the hospital. The nurse seems to feel that all her numbers look good, and she was resting comfortably....thank god! We left the hospital that nite, unable to see her - but a least she was resting comfortably.
