Juniper Berry
Interesting Facts:
There are two types of
essential oil that come from the common shrub. Juniper Berry is
the better quality and the one recommended for therapeutic use.
Juniper Berry is
extracted from the ripe berries that are picked straight from the bush
and dried. The cheaper from of oil (Juniper oil) is extracted
from berries as well as the leaves and branches.
It was used by the
ancient Egyptains and Greeks to ward off infections as well as being
used as part of the embalming process.
During the Middle
Ages, Europeans believed planting a juniper bush beside the front door
kept witches out, however it wouldn't work if the witch could correctly
guess the number of needles on the bush.
Juniper
Berry is currently listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopeia for
rheumatic pain and cystitis.
